Sea quest manta ray night snorkel11/4/2023 ![]() ![]() They were very specific with their instructions about caring for the reef, and had noodles to help support the snorkellers who were a little nervous, but the bay itself is very calm, the water crystal clear, a good variety of coral and fish, and there was PLENTY of time to snorkel. Then around to the Captain Cook memorial. First off we went a couple of miles off shore and hung around the game fishing boats and saw what seemed like hundreds of Pan Tropical Spotted Dolphins. The zodiac was fantastic, the crew were very professional, and luckily the sea was very flat. We went on the 3 hour Captain Cook trip and had a great time. Overall great service & knowledge of the island history. The captain took us into small caves on the shoreline which broke up the drive back to the pier. Snacks on the boat were a chocolate macadamian nut and small bags of chips. Kahalu'u beach is still the best in this area for snorkeling which is accessible by beach, but the boat ride was fun. Jumping in the water at this area was interesting as there was a huge cliff under water that went down for hundreds of feet so very dark blue/ black and the other side a pretty shallow reef with nice coral and usual fish - place of refuge was better. ![]() We saw a little pod of dolphin fins from afar but didn't get a chance to see them up close. Next stop was captain hook monument were there 9 other boats in the bay. The zodiac ride was fun & there was 16 people on board - hold on tight! Snorkelling was ok at both locations - place of Refuge reef was good with colorful coral and a few types of fish. We took the 7:45am zodiac snorkeling trip from Kona.
